BRE Smoke Shaft System Components
Each BRE Smoke Shaft System is made up of a set of AOV Kits, each containing a ventilator and associated controls.
At the roof level, there is an AOV Kit for the top of the smoke shaft (AOV Kit F) and one for the top of the stairwell (AOV Kit B). At each floor level, there is a damper kit (AOV Kit E) for the inlet into the smoke shaft. Finally, there is an optional touchscreen panel that can be used for central monitoring and diagnostics if required.
The control system is fully compliant with BS EN 12101:10 and ISO 21927:9 and has built-in safety features, including ‘locking out’ functionality and battery backup power supplies to ensure safe operation.

Stairwell Vent Kit
A stairwell ventilator/stairwell AOV is an automatic opening ventilator (AOV) that provides at least 1.0m2 of free area when open.
AOV Kit B – Louvred Stair Vent and Controls comprises of:
- 1 x 1.0m² Louvre Vent (Vent Throat Dimensions: L:1104mm x W:1200mm)
- 1 x EV-301-MC-BB – EV-301 AOV Control Panel
- 2 x EV-HE077 – Firemans Override Switch
Head of Shaft Kit
Smoke shaft AOV Kits are used for natural ventilation where the head of the shaft ends with an automatic opening ventilator (AOV).
AOV Kit F – 1.5m² 1.5m² Louvred Smoke Shaft Vent and Controls comprises of:
- 1 x 1.5m² Louvered Vent, opal polycarbonate blades
- 1 x EV-301-MC-BB – EV-301 AOV Control Panel
Lobby Vent Kit
A smoke shaft lobby vent is a multi-compartment smoke control damper compliant with BS EN 12101-8. One Lobby Vent Kit is required per building floor.
AOV Kit E – Lobby Vent Damper Into Shaft comprises of:
- 1 x Damper: 1.0m2 c/w 24v actuator
- 1 x EV-301-MC-BB – EV-301 Control Panel
- 1 x EV-HE077-GRY – Maintenance Switch
- 1 x EV-SD – Photoelectric Smoke Detector

The roof louvred Opensky is a natural and smoke ventilator perfect for comfort ventilation or as part of an N-SHEV (Natural, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation) or UniForce mechanical smoke extraction systems.
CE-marked, EN 12101-2 certified 1.5m2 Stair / Shaft louvre vent manufactured from aluminium providing a geometric free area of 1.5m².
24V smoke damper for use in smoke control systems serving multi-storey buildings for both domestic and commercial UniVent smoke ventilation shafts. The sleeved casing allowing the main damper assembly to be fully recessed, with internal surfaces painted black allowing them to be hidden by the easy-fit grille.
EV-301 Smoke Ventilation AOV Control Panel with Battery Back-up
The CE-marked for smoke control use (tested to EN 12101), control panel monitors and controls smoke control ventilators and interface devices all with the added security of a battery back-up. The innovative design provides a programmable facility (via DIP switches) for limited ventilation (used on day-to-day ventilation to prevent AOV windows opening fully) and timed openings used in conjunction with a thermostat for corridor cooling.
Providing local override control with a visual and audible indication in accordance with BS EN 12101 Part 9 and BS ISO 21927 Part 9. Two buttons provide override open, close and reset functions and three coloured LEDs with an audible buzzer indicate system health, fault and alarm status.

The Easivent photoelectric smoke detector uses a state-of-the-art optical chamber combined with an application-specific integrated circuit to provide quick and accurate detection of fires. The detector has an integral LED, which illuminates to provide a local alarm signal. This latches on and remains illuminated until the detector is reset by a momentary power interruption.
