What is an Electric Chain Actuator used for

An electric chain actuator (chain drive) is ideal for turning windows into auto-opening vents (AOVs) for daily ventilation and smoke control. Our range features a variety of metal-housed products for smoke control use, as well as composite-cased alternatives for natural, day-to-day ventilation.

The 6 advantages of electric chain actuators

In one of our projects, we had to specify an actuator for opening multiple floor-to-ceiling window AOVs. Additionally, there was a specific requirement for the AOVs to deliver natural smoke and daily ventilation to the core of the building. Our Customer Service Engineer, Richard, recommended synchronised pairs of chain drives for this project. Take a look at some of the reasons for his choice:

1. Ease of installation

Chain actuators are fairly straightforward to install providing there is sufficient room on the frame to install it. However, care should be taken to ensure that motors can be accessed for maintenance.

2. Wide variety of programmable options

Chain drives are pre-programmable to specific force and stroke lengths to suit a large proportion of projects. These can be discussed with the Group SCS team prior to order or accessed through our Approved Installer Network.

3. Ease of control

This powerful actuator has a low noise output, it has one motor and low power use. It also operates using reverse polarity.

4. Low cost

Chain drives are a relatively low cost, reliable solution with the flexibility to most suit smoke and natural ventilation projects.

5. Aesthetically Pleasing Design

When installed, the chain drive sits neatly on the frame.

6. Synchronised Versions Available

When more than one chain drive is required on the window, synchronised versions are available.

Find out more about the different types of actuators

If chain actuators aren’t a great fit for your project, or you’d just like to find out more about the topic, explore other types of actuators and their benefits in our blog. In the article we discuss chain, folding arm, and linear and spindle actuators and what they’re best suited for.

Under the Construction Products Regulations (CPR) it is a legal requirement to use only certified products for smoke ventilation. It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure installations meet the relevant standards. For more information see SCS Group’s Technical Bulletin here.
