Meet Rhys Powell, BIM/CAD Design Manager

Rhys Powell

After completing A-levels at Crosskeys College, Rhys began his career with ducting manufacturer Isotemp Ductwork, based in Cwmbran. He worked at Isotemp for approximately six years, starting there as a Trainee Ventilation Draughtsman within its design team, working with AutoCAD and CADDuct MEP. He soon became a Senior Draughtsman, preparing high quality, technical 3D drawings for prestigious UK projects such as Arsenal’s Emirates Football Stadium – London, St Davids 2 Shopping Centre – Cardiff and Johnson and Johnson Project Horizon by Bridgend.

Rhys then moved to Nuaire as its first residential Design Estimator, joining a small team of current estimators. Within two years he earned a senior position in the office. During this he was influential with the introduction of Revit MEP software moving away from the previous AutoCAD 2D design package. After approximately three-and-a-half years he became the team leader of the Residential Estimating Team. He oversaw the recruitment and training of the department whilst continuing to improve the bespoke Revit software.

After five successful years at Nuaire, Rhys began working at Group SCS as its BIM/CAD Design Manager in February 2016.

Rhys said: “Being a member of the Group SCS design team is an exciting position with my work varying from day to day. One day I could be looking at a full BIM model for an interesting new project, the next day I could be attending a design co-ordination meeting on site.

“3D modelling is quickly becoming an essential tool in how buildings are viewed and constructed. With technology and software advancing all of the time, I’m constantly learning as the design process evolves.”

Away from working at Group SCS, Rhys enjoys keeping fit and follows a wide range of sports. Rhys also has a keen interest in art and exhibits his work in multiple galleries.
