Meet Chesney Smith, SHEQ Officer

Chesney Smith Group SCS SHEQ Officer

After leaving school at 17, Chesney – known as Ches – joined the Royal Air Force as a Logistics Specialist (Supplier). In 2009 he was posted to RAF Leuchars in Scotland and soon joined the RAF Mountain Rescue Team based there. In 2015 Ches left the Royal Air Force following the closure of the RAF Mountain Rescue Team. Like many veterans, Ches found it difficult to adjust to civilian life. Trying to decide on his second career, he trained as a personal trainer before starting work with a ground works company based in Bridgwater. While working full time, Ches studied the NEBOSH National General Certificate.

Ches’ first health and safety role was as a Health, Safety and Training assistant for G Works Construction. Ches went on to study the NEBOSH Construction certificate and in 2020 landed a role as a HSE Advisor for Efinor, a French-based engineering company working in the nuclear industry. Ches was promoted to Senior HSE Advisor in 2022.

He is now delighted to join Group SCS as SHEQ Officer and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the company’s Integrated Management System, site inspections and all things SHEQ.

Ches is an IRCA certified Lead auditor, Practitioner Member of the Chartered Quality Institute (PCQI) and a Technical Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Tech IOSH).

Outside of work Ches loves everything outdoors, rock climbing, skiing, and mountain walking. He can often be found wandering the Brecon Beacons with his son Arlo and partner Samantha.
