SCS Group’s hard-working employees certainly have plenty of industry knowledge – but now we can say this has been boosted even further with Operational Retained Firefighter Shaun Montgomery on our team.
Shaun, who is a Project Manager at our Portsmouth office, is employed at Waterlooville Fire Station by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, having completed all of the required training with them.
Shaun joined SCS Group in Autumn 2017 and since then has been making great progress working on a variety of projects and meeting our clients.
At Portsmouth he works alongside Contracts Manager Kevin Mowatt, Project Manager Chris Taylor and Apprentice Project Engineer Josh Mowatt.
But how did Shaun get to SCS Group? We thought it would be interesting to find out more…
After leaving school, Shaun knew he was interested in the construction industry and started an apprenticeship as a carpenter. For five years he worked for Allders doing shopfitting and refurbishment, before moving into commercial glazing systems (curtain walling).
After this, Shaun aspired to get into management and became Installation Manager at Ahmarra – a company that manufactures fire doors and was the preferred supplier for BAA at the time, supplying fire doors to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
He then joined Coopers Fire as a Project Manager working with fire curtains and smoke curtains, where he stayed for just over three years.
He said: “I was there for three years running projects. One of the biggest projects I worked on was The Blatvatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. It was a flagship project for Laing O’Rourke and won a number of awards.
“I recently worked on County Hall, London. We we did the first floor fire curtains as part of a renovation. With all of the jobs I liked to be there on site making sure things were done on time – I like the contact with site teams and building relationships.”
Now at SCS Group, Shaun is looking forward to building relationships as part of his role. He said: “SCS Group is customer focused. I enjoy being able to see something delivered and it’s nice to get feedback. It feels like a company going in the right direction. SCS Group’s core beliefs are similar to my own beliefs.
“As a Project Manager in the South, I’ll be carrying on the commitment throughout the business to build relationships and hopefully bring in new opportunities.”
Outside work, Shaun is kept busy with his duties as a Retained Firefighter and family life. He said: “I’ve got two boys – Tristan, 6, and Dominic, 9, who keep me busy. They take part in various sports and are both involved with karate. We like going for walks as a family with our dog on the South Downs or on the beach too.”
