HE’S done it! SCS Group’s Regional Manager (Wales and West) Mike Jackson completed Ironman Wales in great style last night, crossing the finish line to become an official ‘Ironman’.
Mike, who was feeling nervous but excited before the event, is based in our Cardiff office. He signed up for the event along with his friend Ryan Davies to raise money for South Wales-based children’s hospice Ty Hafan.
Triathlon enthusiast Mike completed the tough event in 16 hours, 13 minutes and 46 seconds after starting the event at 7.15am in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, as the sun began to rise.
Joined by 1,700 athletes, Mike enthusiastically took on the challenge, starting with a 2.4-mile swim through strong tides in 16° water. He completed this first part in one hour, one minute and 50 seconds.
Next up was a 112-mile bike ride up and down the Pembrokeshire countryside’s relentless hills. Mike completed this in eight hours, 15 minutes and five seconds. As if that wasn’t enough, Mike then had to complete a full marathon, which he did in six hours, 30 seconds and 51 seconds. He completed the challenge well within the 17-hour limit athletes are given to get to the finish line. Scroll down to see a video of Mike crossing the finish line.
Mike and Ryan have previously completed the Three Peaks Challenge as well as a number of triathlons in which they’ve always raised money for Ty Hafan – in fact they raised more than £3,000 just for the Three Peaks Challenge.
Ty Hafan cares for life-limited children and their families from across Wales. It costs £3.7m a year to provide its state-of-the art facilities in Sully and its support services to families out in the community.
