Here at Group SCS, we are delighted to hear the Cardiff interchange, a new multi-purpose development in the heart of the Welsh capital, has become the first building in the UK to achieve Home Quality Mark ONE (HQM ONE) interim certification at the design stage.

Located in Central Square, the new 500,000sq ft development from Rightacres – which neighbours the BBC’s Wales’ new headquarters, includes a new bus station, 100,000sq ft of new grade A office space, features 318 HQM-certified build-to-rent apartments once construction is completed at the end of 2022.

We are currently on-site in PRS Building One, Cardiff interchange, installing the natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems. The systems have been designed to protect the common corridors, firefighting lobbies and stairs for means of escape and to assist with firefighting operations. Systems were selected based on the building’s geometry using code compliant natural shafts and mechanical smoke ventilation (MSVS) for extended travel corridors.

An article in this month’s Modern Building Services (MBS), explains that HQM ONE is BRE’s new benchmarking standard for sustainability and quality and it is set to play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of UK homes.
MBS reports: “The Cardiff Interchange, owned by Legal & General, is not only the first project anywhere in the world to be certified under HQM ONE at design stage, but is also the first development in Wales to gain any HQM certification.”
