Group SCS Director Allan Meek (pictured) will be giving a presentation on the Guide to smoke control in common escape routes in apartment block buildings as part of this year’s Fire Safety Event at the NEC Birmingham in September.

The event, which runs September 7-9, 2021, will see Allan representing the Smoke Control Association (SCA) – which published the guide – for the Seminar at 2.30pm on Thursday, September 9, in the Tall Buildings Theatre.

Allan said: “I’m very much looking forward to giving this seminar which will be of interest to specifiers, purchasers, and approving authorities.

“I will be reviewing the October 2020 update of the guide that has become the industry standard for the design and installation of smoke control provision to higher risk residential buildings since its original publication in 2010.

“The standards relating to products used in fire engineered smoke control solutions, in particular mechanical extract shafts, will be covered in detail as well as performance criteria for buildings with extended travel distances.”

The SCA has signed up to be a supporter of the Fire Safety Event and will have a dedicated stand (number 4/M118) where personnel will be promoting SCA membership and extolling the benefits of specifying SCA members.

The SCA, the voice of the smoke control industry, requires its members – such as Group SCS – to adhere to a strict code of conduct that includes being third party certificated under the IFC SDI 19 Certification scheme (developed by the SCA in partnership with IFC Certification).

In partnering with the event, the SCA has joined a network of key industry associations such as the ASFP, BESA and the FPA.

Fire Safety EventThe SCA will be taking part in two seminars at the event, both on Thursday, September 9.

At 11.30am Conor Logan will give a presentation in a session ‘Is your building compliant with fire safety laws?’, alongside Mark Cottell, Building Safety Programme Lead – National Fire Chiefs Council. This will be in the Fire Safety Theatre. Later, at 2.30pm, Allan Meek will present on the Guide to Smoke control in common escape routes in apartment block buildings in the Tall Buildings Theatre.
