Class D pressurisation system for Canary Wharf landmark development

Project title: South Quay Plaza

Location: Canary Wharf

Client: Berkeley Homes

Service: Pressurisation System

Project Background

South Quay Plaza is a landmark development designed by world-leading architects Foster + Partners. The building has been designed to maximise space in the 2.6 acres of gardens that surround it, allowing sunlight to flood the gardens and provide dual aspect views for many of the apartments.

The Project

The Client
The construction of this building posed a significant fire risk to the workforce due to its height and Group SCS was appointed by Berkeley Homes to design and install a smoke control system to mitigate the risks and allow construction to proceed.
Our Involvement
Working from the fire strategy produced by Trenton Fire, Group SCS opted for a Class D pressurisation system designed to BS EN 12101-6. This was done because the evacuation of occupants engaged in construction work may take longer than that expected in an alert or able-bodied environment.

Our solution

The system comprised a vertical air supply shaft serving the stairwell from Basement 3 to level 67. Two sets of run/standby pressurisation fans were installed at levels Ground and 33. The supply shaft contained 23No. Injection point openings at every third-floor level. The openings were covered with a high free area bird mesh to prevent debris ingress into the ductwork when the system was not in use. A pressure control system was used to operate the system automatically and give manual override control to the fire and rescue service

The solution was installed and commissioned by Group SCS to meet the construction program.
