City of Westminster College

Project title: City of Westminster College

Location: Paddington Green, London

Value: £102 Million

Duration: 4 Months

Project Background

Our partner HCD Building Control Ltd was appointed to provide Building Control services for the project to create a flagship campus for this leading London further and higher education college.
At the heart of the scheme is a staggered inner atrium filled with natural light. This central galleried space acts as a social and study area, leading to adjacent zones providing teaching and learning facilities, workshops, meeting rooms and administrative accommodation. Voids cut into the building’s mass reinforce the perception of a contemporary and welcoming learning environment.
Responsibility for ensuring that these innovative, non-standard design concepts were translated into reality while complying with UK Building Regulations lay with the design team, particularly HCD Building Control.

The Project

The Client
Our partner HCD Building Control Ltd was appointed to provide Building Control services for the project to create a flagship campus for this leading London further and higher education college.
The Solution
Group SCS was appointed to implement a comprehensive smoke management system to ensure the safety of the occupants in the event of a fire.

Our Involvement

The risk of smoke spreading through the atrium presented a particular challenge and a bespoke mechanical smoke extract system was used to manage this risk. The Group SCS and HCD partnership ensured the system met the requirements of the fire strategy and complied with building regulations.
The campus building has won a RIBA Award and an NLA New London Award in recognition of its design excellence.
