Project title: Abercynon School
Location: South Wales
Service: BEMS & Control System
The new £11.5m Abercynon Community Primary School has been awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating for its design by the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) at Design Stage assessment.
The ambitious school has been built on the site of a former infants’ school and adult education centre, in the heart of Abercynon village; it illustrates Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s commitment to creating inspirational education facilities for the 21st Century.
To meet its desired BREEAM status, the structure featured several energy-saving systems including intelligent BEMS and mixed passive/mechanical ventilation.
It was originally designed with these numerous building services running on separate communication protocols from numerous different suppliers; Group SCS was selected for its industry-leading expertise in making these system communicate with each other, thereby centralising BEMS control to save on installation costs, running difficulties and ongoing maintenance issues. Many other building control specialists would have said it was a near impossible task.
