KEEPING up to date with the latest Health and Safety requirements is extremely important to SCS Group – and helping us to achieve this is Simon Richards, who has joined the company as Health and Safety, Quality and Environment (SHEQ) Officer.

We thought it would be interesting to find out more about Simon and how his career has led him to SCS Group…

After leaving school at the age of 16 and having always been interested in the construction industry Simon completed a 4-year apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. Following the completion of his apprenticeship he worked for many local and national companies covering residential and commercial projects.

After a number of years he progressed into more supervisory and management roles and during this time completed further education qualifications including a BTEC in Building Studies and HNC in Construction Management. This allowed him to progress further into Site Management which saw him involved in a number of prestigious contracts within South Wales, such as the DARA Project at St.Athans (Laing O’Rourke), Aspers Casino Swansea (MIDAS), Welsh Government Offices and Council Offices in Aberystwyth (Carillion and Wilmot Dixon).

Health and Safety matters

He said: “During my time as a Site Manager I became interested in the Health and Safety matters within the construction industry and felt this would be a more challenging aspect to follow, so completed a NEBOSH General and Environmental qualification along with a CMI Level 4 Diploma in Management and Leadership.

“I then became the Health and Safety Manager for a local company based at the Port Talbot Steelworks, building and developing the necessary integrated QSHE management systems to ensure the company met the levels of required standards, legislation and regulations.”

Part of his role was to reduce the accident frequency rate within the company, which he accomplished through raised communication, consultation and coaching of the workforce.

Simon said: “The best part of my job is building relationships, both within the company and clients, and using my knowledge and experience to enable solutions to be found to any problems that may occur within the ever-changing health and safety industry. Also, building morale and a good safety culture and hopefully being able to make a difference.”

SCS Group role

Simon’s role within SCS is to ensure the company is meeting compliance and regulatory factors relating to policies and procedures under ISO standards, HSE regulations and guidelines, ensuring continuous improvement within these areas.

Simon added: “This is a fresh challenge and career move for me working with SCS as it brings me into another demanding field within the construction industry.”

Outside work, Simon enjoys playing golf, spending time with his wife and twin daughters and walking his Cocker spaniel in the lovely Welsh countryside. In his spare time he enjoys making wooden gifts/furniture from offcuts and recycled pallets within his “man-cave” (shed).
