SCS Group will be helping youngsters to keep their cool this summer thanks to fantastic BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems) installed at their schools.

BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems) or BMS (Building Management Systems) are designed to integrate various environmental controls such as heating, lighting, ventilation and security through one system.

SCS Group’s approach to BEMS is one that’s all about saving energy and saving money. We are entirely independent, able to turn our hand to whatever equipment the customer wants (including Priva, Trend and Schneider).

We have recently carried out work at a number of schools across the UK, which you can read about here.

Childs Hill Primary School, London

At Childs Hill Primary School, in Barnet, London, we were contracted to design and install a system to control the heating and ventilation in the Foundation Building and main kitchen area. This included the supply and installation of sensors to monitor temperature including weather compensating controls.

The most challenging aspect of this project was designing a system using new equipment that would communicate equally well with both old and new heating and ventilation equipment. To devise the most appropriate solution, we surveyed the existing system to gather data required to design a robust control system able to work effectively with both.

Using data from the survey, we modified the existing control system to incorporate new Priva controllers. We then designed and programmed software for new control panels and installed them throughout the building.

Brett Cowlbeck, Project Manager at Essex Services Group, said: “This wasn’t a straightforward project due to the challenge of having to integrate a new control system with existing equipment for which we had little or no technical data. SCS Group’s well-considered and expert solution was effective and came in under budget which was a bonus. Having worked with them for a long time I knew I could rely on their technical expertise and excellent service and they demonstrated this once again on this project.”

Abercynon Community Primary School, South Wales

SCS Group was selected to work on this new £11.5m community primary school because of its industry-leading expertise in making different systems communicate with each other.

Our BEMS controls solution was devised to incorporate the numerous building services from energy monitoring/display systems to natural ventilation and underfloor heating. This meant the extremely challenging integration of XML, Modbus, M-Bus and BACnet, all into one unified system.

SCS Group designed and manufactured the required control panels in-house, as well as undertaking installation and commissioning of the whole controls project on site, utilising Priva systems to their fullest capacity in a way that maximised cost and energy savings where possible.

Mike Jackson, Regional Manager (Wales and West), said: “A lot of BEMS companies would run a mile faced with this level of integration. Not so SCS Group!”

Treorchy Primary School, South Wales

We were commissioned by South Wales firm Electrical Plus to carry out work at the school during major refurbishment works, with the specifications set by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

Our work at the school was a BMS project using the Trend IQ3 Control System. For this we designed and manufactured a bespoke panel.

Andrew Massey, Contract Manager at Electrical Plus, said: “SCS were accommodating. I would phone up my direct contact Dave (Jackson) and it was dealt with straight away or in an agreed time. Additional works were picked up by SCS Group and completed. I found SCS Group to be professional and accommodating.”

Williamstown Primary School, South Wales

SCS Group was appointed to supply and install the BEMS, energy monitoring/display system and natural ventilation at this new school in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

SCS Group integrated the natural ventilation in the heart of the building onto the BEMS system which reduced the costs of the installation and increased the functionality and monitoring of the ventilation. SCS also installed an EnDat energy display system which monitors the energy and teaches the school users about energy usage.
