THIS is the terrifying moment SCS Group’s Managing Director Allan Meek accidentally slipped off a ladder above a crevasse while conquering Mount Everest.
Allan, who reached the summit of Everest on May 16 after weeks of climbing and training, has shared a video of the incident via YouTube and it shows how he lost his balance while using a ladder to cross a crevasse (see video at end of this story).
It happened on April 27 as Allan made his way from Everest Base Camp to Camp One, as part of his expedition with Nepalese company Ascent Himalayas.
‘Ladders hadn’t bothered me’
He said: “It happened about two-thirds of the way through the Khumbu Icefall. The ladders hadn’t bothered me being in construction.
“As you cross there are loose ropes on either side that you hold onto and it is courtesy to pull them tight for the next person once you’ve crossed. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me – as I fell I kept hold of one of the ropes and then managed to swing my legs over the other one so I was hanging upside down.”
Allan continued: “I had a heavy pack on which was straining my hands a bit but I was reasonably comfortable and didn’t really feel in danger as I was also clipped onto both lines with my harness.”
Sherpas on Everest trek ‘were brilliant’
Allan said the Sherpas were brilliant and dropped another line down to him to clip onto him which was then made safe. One of the Sherpas then crawled out onto the ladder and dropped a rope down and hooked it behind his head and Allan put his arms through it.
Allan said: “Then they got everyone together and hauled me out.”
But how did Allan keep calm during those ten minutes hanging upside down?
He said: “After a while I realised I was listening to AC/DC in one earphone so I tuned into that and relaxed!”
After the fall, Allan was feeling pretty drained and found it a hard slog getting to Camp One. Fortunately, he was able to regain his energy and continue his successful mission to the summit.
