Meet Mike Card, Commercial Director

Mike Card

Mike Card left Barry Boys School in 1986 after completing his O-levels. Not knowing which direction to go in at that point, he embarked on study at Barry College where he attained two Diplomas in Business Studies.

Mike then began working at The Bank of Wales, where he stayed for a year before getting the chance to work with Crown House Engineering. There he started in Credit Control before joining the newly set up Quantity Surveying Department as a trainee.

He said: “In a 16-year career I progressed to Senior Quantity Surveyor working on various projects including those within steelworks, coal mines, council offices, shopping developments and court buildings. During this time I completed an NVQ Level 4 in Management.”

After Crown House, Mike joined NG Bailey as a Senior Quantity Surveyor at its Cardiff office. During his 15-year career at NG Bailey he progressed to Regional Commercial Director looking after the Midlands, South West and Wales. This involved overseeing many prestigious developments including: the New Street Train Station redevelopment in Birmingham; Cardiff and Swansea Football Stadiums; and projects for Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, MOD, Admiral Insurance, and Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter and Birmingham Universities to name but a few.

At Group SCS, Mike is providing both leadership and support to the Group SCS teams in relation to commercial activities and plays a key part in ensuring our strategic growth plans are achieved.

Outside work, Mike enjoys travelling (“glamping only” he tells us), along with his wife, two children and their Old English Sheepdog across different parts of the UK and Europe.
