Ben Sausman, Contracts Manager at SCS GroupBen Sausman, Contracts Manager

After completing GCSEs and A-levels at school, Ben entered the world of work and started working in the fire industry in 1999 as a Contract Assistant.

He has since been a Project Engineer, Project Manager and is now Contracts Manager. His roles have seen him working at a number of companies including Siemens, ADT, Protec, Trinity Protection Systems and Fire Design Solutions (FDS).

At Siemens, where he worked for ten years, he was both a Project Manager and a Key Account Manager for order creation. At Trinity, he was the Project Manager for the Excel exhibition centre extension – a £2million project for Sir Robert McAlpine with fire detection, PAVA, access control, intruder and CCTV.

He entered the world of smoke control when he began his role at FDS in 2011.

He said: “Initially I was a Project Manager running a large volume of work including several prestigious and flagship developments around London for clients such as Galliard Homes, Berkeley Homes, St James, Barratt, Weston Homes, Willmott Dixon, St George, McLaren and more.”

In 2014 he took on the role of Senior Project Manager leading to Contracts Manager, running a team of seven Project Managers with control of the financial aspects of projects along with assisting and training the Project Managers.

He said: “I introduced a new computer system and in conjunction with the group financial controller changed the profit and turnover reporting to a WIP/deferral system. I was also responsible for and trained in the negotiation and review of contract terms and conditions.”

Ben is now Contracts Manager at SCS Group, based at our London office. He said: “To allow the region to continue its growth, I have been taken on to manage the London smoke team. This will allow direct sales activities for BMS within the London region.

“As I am from the smoke industry with exact experience in the role and in growing and stabilising a team, I will be able to offer a greater level of experience and customer focus to our clients. I will also be able to train and pass on knowledge and experience of general construction, fire and smoke industry and contract negotiation and financial control.”

Ben’s favourite part of his job is interacting with clients and training and guiding Project Managers.

He said: “I enjoy passing on knowledge and getting the best from Project Managers – as I have always been one prior to moving up, I know what it takes.”

Outside work Ben is a keen musician and has been in bands most of his life. He has written and recorded several albums and plays guitar and sings with bands. He also plays drums, bass and piano. Away from music, Ben is a keen golfer and also plays cricket for his local team.

Ben loves spending time with his five-year-old son Ridley, teaching him golf, cricket and guitar. He also enjoys socialising with his wife and friends.
