Project Background

The new £11.5m Abercynon Community Primary School has been awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating for its design by the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) at Design Stage assessment.

The ambitious school has been built on the site of a former infants’ school and adult education centre, in the heart of Abercynon village; it illustrates Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s commitment to creating inspirational education facilities for the 21st Century.

SCS Group’s Solution

Our BEMS controls solution was devised to incorporate the numerous building services from energy monitoring/display systems to natural ventilation and underfloor heating. This meant the extremely challenging integration of XML, Modbus, M-Bus and BACnet, all into one unified system.

SCS Group designed and manufactured the required control panels in-house, as well as undertaking installation and commissioning of the whole controls project on site, utilising Priva systems to their fullest capacity in a way that maximised cost and energy savings where possible.

SCS Group’s Involvement

To meet its desired BREEAM status, the structure featured several energy-saving systems including intelligent BEMS and mixed passive/mechanical ventilation.

It was originally designed with these numerous building services running on separate communication protocols from numerous different suppliers; SCS Group was selected for its industry-leading expertise in making these system communicate with each other, thereby centralising BEMS control to save on installation costs, running difficulties and ongoing maintenance issues. Many other building control specialists would have said it was a near impossible task.
